What are some good freeware for making animated gifs from video files?

I basically want to be able to crop specific parts of a video and then create/edit gifs. Looking for freeware....everything i looked at so far is either trial/buy.

Edit: Sorry. i left out the cropping part.. If you want to crop certain areas of your video then turn them into animated GIFs then you'll have to go with Adobe AfterEffects, this software handles videos like you won't believe, plus you can add your own custom made special effects on it, or start building animated GIFs or HD Videos right from scratch, even thou the software does requires a basic level of experience, but trust me.. it's worth every minut...
