What software should I get to organize my photos into folders by date?

Right now, I have my photos clustered in a folder. They are just there; no subfolders or anything. I want there to be folders in this pictures folder of mine that are dated with their respective dated pictures inside. I know something like picasa will visually organize like this, but I want it to be actually organized on my hard drive. Can you recommend some software, preferably free but might pay up to $20 for something that actually works, that will do what I want? Thank you very much!!
