What is the best freeware for converting video files to mp4 to be played on iPods ?

I am after freeware, that is free software, i prefer if it had no restrictions or loaded with advertising. I am also after full versions rather than trials. I will be converting the following video files; mpg, mpeg, wmv, mov, avi.
