How are freeware makers of software able to make profit when they are freely distributing their products ?

Internet is full of fully functional freeware which are available on the net. So how do these makers of freeware able to profit ? Is there a catch behind it ?

2. Advertising, donations, and due to the fact that these are often used as development platforms for other things, so a commercial product may also be financing it.
3. Most use donations and Support contracts.
